Healthy eating policy

Ickle Pickles Day Nursery takes great pride in offering nutritional and healthy food for all children attending sessions including meals.
The Nursery has its own experienced cook on the premises and alongside the Nursery team we will endeavour to supply varied, visually attractive and nutritious meals to the children in the setting.
Our menus will always be on display on the Nursery notice-board and will rotate on a 4 weekly basis, with some seasonal amendments e.g. salads in summer.

We aim to provide the recommended 5 portions of fruit and vegetables every day for all children attending a full day.

Breakfast will be provided for all children arriving before 9am and will consist of cereals, white and wholemeal toast and fruit. The breakfast will be adapted for the relevant age groups, e.g. baby porridge for weaning babies and on occasions allowing the children to make their own selection from the 'breakfast bar' for the older children.

Snacks will be served mid-morning and mid-afternoon along with diluted fruit juice, water or milk. Again, the snacks will be adapted according to your child's age and older children may select their own snack from the 'snack bar'.

Lunch and a pudding will be served around mid-day, and all children will be encouraged to sit together to enjoy their meals. All staff are also encouraged to share the same meals as the children and to participate in meal sessions, as we feel this shows a positive role-model to the children. It is Nursery policy not to withhold dessert from any child who does not eat their main meal. Fresh drinking water will be available to all children at all times.

The Nursery Cook, Nursery Manager and Nursery Director hold current Food Hygiene certificates and will work together to ensure best hygiene practices at all time.

We will of course aim to cater for all dietary requirements. We aim to cook all meals without nuts and prevent staff from bringing these into the nursery.

If your child has any particular requirements e.g. a vegetarian diet or allergies we will discuss this with you prior to your child's first session at the nursery. The Nursery Manager and Cook will liaise with the Parents/Carers to create a 'Care Plan' to ensure your child's diet adheres to your requirements. Our cook will ensure separate preparation of any specialist meals and different coloured plates and cutlery will be used in the case of allergies to minimise any cross-contamination.
For this reason we request that children do not bring food from home into the nursery, to ensure our high levels of health and hygiene are maintained and to ensure no child is open to potential exposure to any uncontrolled allergens.
